Our journey finishes in Civitavecchia, where, guarding the port entrance, a remarkable stone tower still survives from the ancient Roman harbour. Explore Mount Etna These range from astonishment at the artistry of the frescos which still adorn the villas of wealthy aristocrats and would put many a modern interior designer to shame, to overwhelming sadness when you see the famous plaster casts of the bodies of Pompeii's citizens, some shielding their faces with their arms as they were buried in ash. Our journey finishes in Civitavecchia, where guarding the port entrance a remarkable stone tower still survives from the ancient Roman harbour. Through the excellent onboard lectures and informative guides, we've learnt that maritime trade was key to the success of the Graeco-Roman world. During the eight days, we've sailed along some of those very same trading routes and to arrive at these beautiful, ruined cities by sea gives visitors an added appreciation of the remarkable achievements of the ancient world. viking.com | 37 C H R I S T M A S I S S U E 2 8
