7 | Viking Explorer Society News WHERE TO NEXT? Looking for inspiration for your next incredible Viking voyage? We take a look at some of our newest ports, experiences and destinations waiting to be explored. From historic cities to charming coastal towns, we invite you to explore the rich cultures and magnificent landscapes of these unique locations. Londonderry, Northern Ireland Often referred to simply as Derry, Londonderry is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland, straddling both banks of the River Foyle. The only completely walled city in Ireland, the 17th-century stone walls with fully intact gates, watchtowers, battlements, and bastions stretch for over 1.5 kilometres and offer a unique glimpse into the city's turbulent history. The city has become a creative culture hub, where sculptures and painted murals adorn buildings and squares, an up-and-coming food scene thrives and traditional music fills the streets from cosy pubs. For a deeper dive into history, visit the award-winning Tower Museum, depicting Derry's evolution from an early settlement to the modern, resilient city it is today. Haugesund, Norway The coastal town of Haugesund proudly claims its place as the birthplace of Norway. Dating back to 1217, Haugesund is steeped in history, first mentioned in the Norse sagas. See the Haraldshaugen Monument, an obelisk celebrating the unification of Norway into one kingdom in 872 and believed to mark the burial spot of Norway's first king. Visit the Arquebus War History Museum, one of Norway's largest museums exhibiting artifacts from the Resistance and learn about the efforts of local Norwegians to resist the World War II Nazi occupation. For a truly unique experience, be welcomed into the beautiful home of Anne and Leif Bjarte, garden designer and landscape architect. Their charming residence and stunning gardens showcase nature at its best with flowers in bloom from late spring (April/May) until late summer (September). Enjoy refreshments including fresh herbal teas picked straight from the garden, while Anne and Leif provide insight on the history of the house and share their tips on gardening.
