W I N T E R I S S U E 2 6 viking.com | 40 GEYSIR GEOTHERMAL AREA: WITNESS THE EARTH EXPLODE In the Geysir geothermal area in Haukadalur Valley, the ground hisses, bubbles and steams with pent-up energy. This is where the term "geyser" originated—and while the original Great Geysir now lies mostly dormant, its neighbouring geyser, Strokkur, steals the show. Every few minutes, Strokkur blasts a column of boiling water up to 20 metres into the air, thrilling onlookers with its unpredictable, explosive power. The surrounding terrain is surreal—a steaming, alien landscape painted in rusty reds, charcoal greys and sulphuric yellows. It's wild, mesmerising and utterly unforgettable. "A front-row seat to erupting geysers, thundering waterfalls, bubbling mud pools and ancient tectonic rifts" GULLFOSS WATERFALL: FEEL THE POWER OF NATURE Just when you think you have seen Iceland's greatest wonders, Gullfoss Waterfall, the country's most iconic cascade, reveals an immense display of power and grace. Gullfoss means "Golden Falls", and here, the Hvítá River plunges in two stages into a deep, rugged canyon, with water roaring over the edge at an average rate of 140 cubic metres per second. There is something primal about standing on the edge of a natural wonder like this. It makes you feel small in the best possible way. The Golden Circle is an encounter with geology in its most dramatic form and a reminder that in our modern world, there are places where nature still takes the lead.
