LAGOM Aim to apply the Swedish word of "lagom" to your life. Lagom means not too much, and not too little—but just the right amount. Eat everything, but instead have smaller portions. Treat yourself to a slice of cake if you want one, and pick your favourite one. If you are having an alcoholic drink, pace yourself and drink to savour the taste. Try to do things that you enjoy, rather than force yourself because you believe it is "good for you"; if you would rather go for a walk than a gym class, do it. You are much more likely to repeat good behaviour which you enjoy and turn it into a habit. And to be truly Scandinavian, take a walk in nature if you can. THE SCANDINAVIAN LIFESTYLE The Nordic lifestyle is all about balance. Scandinavians are often accused of "chasing a healthy lifestyle", but tell them this and they are likely to meet you with an incredulous remark. Cycling to work, hiking, skinny dipping in the summer, eating oily fish, using the sauna, having family time, exercise, not working more than 37 hours a week—it is all just a natural part of a balanced life, and you fit in just enough of each (lagom). SNOW, ICE AND HEAT On Viking ocean ships you will find authentic Nordic therapies available in The Nordic Spa, including the Snow Grotto, where real snowflakes fall gently from the ceiling. The idea is to alternate between the heat of the sauna and the ice cold of the Snow Grotto, to awaken the senses, ease the muscles and revive the skin.
