This page" Balloon launch, Viking Polaris
boundaries, and we need to protect them,"
Holly says passionately, steering the Zodiac
back towards the warmer sanctuary of the
Viking Polaris. "Phytoplankton is one of the
first organisms to react to climate change and
studying it here will help us understand how
the rest of the world will react."
During our expedition, Dr. Moore's team
conducted a wide range of research, assisted
by guests who helped gather data on citizen
science programs.
Results and observations were shared and
celebrated each evening in the ship's
stunning, panoramic auditorium, The Aula.
During our expedition, a breakthrough was
made with the discovery of a new penguin
colony. Unexpected fish species were also
spotted courtesy of underwater camera
boxes. "Sometimes it feels like I'm at a
scientific conference every day with guests
challenging my ideas and I love that," remarks
Dr. Moore while teaching a small group in
the lab. "You always get good questions,
which is inspiring."
After returning home, enriched by
newfound knowledge and with a vastly
enhanced understanding of the forces
affecting Antarctica's delicate environment
and ecosystem, it's easy to see what Dr.
Moore means. "Antarctica is a wonderful
thing to experience, as it gives us hope. Here
you see there are still pristine areas with
huge amounts of wildlife," he says. "This
gives us hope that there's still something
worth protecting and so every action we take
once we're home is worth it."
