16 | Viking Explorer Society News A–Fjord Yourself THE LUXURY Bethan Andrews discovers the immersive nature of the shores and fjords of Scandinavia, and learns that cruising offers limitless possibilities E ver since travelling around New Zealand, I've been drawn to the magic of fjordlands. The opportunity to experience an itinerary that, not only puts you on the water, at the heart of the Norwegian fjordlands, but also allows you to experience life on the shores along the way, was nothing short of a dream come true. Hygge, derived from a sixteenth-century Norwegian term, hugge, meaning "to comfort", is a huge part of Scandinavian culture. Norwegians embrace the cosiness the concept dictates; the relaxation, indulgence, and gratitude. The fjordlands envelope you in a hug and swaddle you in nature, and the week-long itinerary evokes this exact feeling, too. You'll leave feeling grateful, rested, and thanks to Viking, incredibly indulged. In fact, cosiness and comfort is something that Viking excudes, from the beautiful Scandinavian interiors, to the facilitated intimacy of friendships made. Despite the snuggness, there's an incredible feeling of space on Viking Jupiter, and the boutique hotel design is fresh and luxurious. With multiple bar areas to enjoy (a favourite of mine being the wideview Explorers' Lounge), The Nordic Spa, indoor Main Pool, outdoor Infinity Pool, as well as The Star Theatre and sports deck, there's entertainment at every turn. The trip began with a day at sea, travelling the North Sea to Skagen, Denmark. It's a wonderful opportunity to sample everything onboard Viking Jupiter, such as hunkering down by the curated bookshelves or taking time out in the Explorers' Dome. Fuel up in one of the many eateries, from the exquisite The Chef's Table, buffet-style World Café, Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, to a la carte The Restaurant. As I closed the first night on the top deck, with resident astronomer Jonathan Ward talking me, and other excited guests, through the skies above us, I realised how enriching this trip would be. Waking up in Skagen, Denmark's northernmost town, we disembarked for the first time. Skagen is a place synonymous with being the summer holiday destination for well-to-do Danes (including the royals), often visiting from cosmopolitan Copenhagen. We travelled by bus to the site of the sand-covered church and, enhanced by the captivating storytelling from our Viking guide, were reminded of the relentless power of nature. Built in the 14th Old Town of Copenhagen, DenmarkAthens
