D
etailed planning is now well underway for Spirit of
New Zealand's trip to Sydney, Australia to participate
in the International Fleet Review and Tall Ship Festival.
Recognising the aspect of the event, the Royal New Zealand
Navy has joined with the Spirit of Adventure Trust to provide 40
young naval personnel to man and crew Spirit of New Zealand
to Australia. Spirit will still carry her regular crew however, like
all voyages the Spirit undertakes she still requires the manpower
of the 40 voyage crew on board.
This Spirit and navy co-ordination is an extension of our
long standing relationship with the RNZN, as each year Spirit
undertakes two, five-day training voyages for naval cadets.
This opportunity provides an excellent training ground for the
naval personnel to not only experience the challenges of a transTasman crossing, but sailing a square rigged ship in the process.
It is worth noting that many navies of the world own and operate
tall ships as part of their training programme. Recently the royal
navy of Oman announced the commissioning of a new 87m
square rigged ship for delivery in August 2014 to replace their
existing sail training vessel.
Spirit of New Zealand will depart Wellington on September
21, 2013, bound for Sydney and is required to
dney
meet the fleet of other tall ships off Sydney
Heads on October 3. At this time, Spirit

tre.
This will require the Pyrmont Bridge to be
opened to allow Spirit and the other tall

ships to enter the bay. The naval fleet of
warships is expected in on October 4.
There are various activities planned
over the following days, with the major

naval fleet review taking place on October 5. We understand
that there are some 50-plus naval ships from around the world
to be in attendance. Ships will be open to the public in Sydney
from 6-8 October, with the tall ship fleet departing on October
10. The majority of the fleet will then head to Auckland (via
Opua) and arrive in the Waitemata Harbour, off North Head in
Auckland, on October 25 for the Auckland Tall Ship Festival
,
over Labour weekend.
