When one looks at the statistics, the numbers are staggering: For example, in 10 years the team collected some 25,080,002 pieces of non bio-degradable litter from our waterways. This was enough to fill 105 x 20-foot shipping containers. Add to the crew time, some 16,350 hours of volunteer assistance was given and the job is still not done. The Trust estimates that today they are collecting over two million pieces of rubbish annually and it is growing. Even with the new vessel, this is just not sustainable. Something must be done at the source and education appears not to be providing the full solution. So, how do we convince the public to clean up their act? Look around any shopping centre, mall or even the corner dairy with a takeaway nearby and between the litter and graffiti you will get some idea of the problem at its source. While not all this litter enters the stormwater system, it is where most of the plastic originates before it slowly heads down stream to our waterways. I well remember when Harry Lee Kuan Yew became the Prime Minister of Singapore in 1959, by the mid 60s he had dropped the name Harry but was instrumental in cleaning up Singapore and changing it from an Asian cesspit, where one could die from disease from the open stormwater drains, to a world leading Commando Boats NZ Ltd PH A simple helm station Commando Boats offers a specialist design and development service, providing total project management with the facilities and the skills to produce watercraft to Marine Survey specification.
