checkin Photography by Graham Watson count, whether it's improving myself as a cyclist or as a person in the community. Preserving our environment, reducing energy, saving costs, making more time – these are the things we need to think about if we want to be around for a long time. How has becoming a father changed you? My family life helps me put things into context and keeps me grounded. I'm amazed at how much of an influence we have on our children. Seeing my own behaviour imitated by somebody else makes me even more conscious of everything I do. Sustainability is certainly in the forefront of my mind more than ever now that I'm a father. Personally, I'd prefer to be remembered for how I went about my job rather than how 'successful' I was at my profession. 2 I've been really blessed to see some spectacular sites around the world from my bike – and I'd like to make sure future cyclists can experience the same thing. How do you see the links between cycling and sustainability? Being on a bike gives an amazing sense of connection with the world and its elements. Having spent years cycling, I've learnt to sense everything, from the weather to road infrastructure, driver attitudes, pollution, litter and even if a person in the car that just passed was smoking a cigarette or not. A bike is a great place to observe from and reflect upon. Photography by Rob Lindblade In one of your books, you wrote, 'Only the victors are remembered'. How important is it for you to leave a legacy? And how would you describe your ideal legacy? Of course, in sport, results are what count for most – otherwise we probably wouldn't bother competing. But fortunately, a lot of followers of sport have a greater perspective than looking at just results. Being a good role model to my fans, as well as [to] people outside of my sport, is important, and … why I would prefer to be remembered for how I went about what I do. I guess my 'ideal legacy' would be one that is broader than racing alone. It would be great to be remembered for my results both on and off the sporting field, and the way I went about achieving them.
