advertorial Keeping it clean Advancements in diesel engine technology have increased the importance of contaminant-free diesel fuel, which can be achieved through filtration solutions. As emission standards from diesel-burning engines become more stringent and the fuel economy of an engine becomes increasingly important, so does the condition of diesel fuel. In order to achieve cleaner-burning diesel engines, engine manufacturers have implemented higher injector pressures of diesel fuel into engines' combustion chambers. These higher pressures result in cleaner, more efficient burns of diesel fuel. Higher injector pressures also mean that diesel fuel must be cleaner and free of water. Both types of contaminant – water and particulate – can affect the spray patterns of injectors in combustion chambers, as these contaminants wear away the tolerances in injectors and lead to bad spray patterns. Cleanliness levels of ISO17/15/13 are being specified by end users at the point of dispense, with water content levels as low as 100ppmw (parts per million by weight). Sometimes, however, conventional 'onboard engine' diesel filters and coalescing filters are not enough to ensure that these requirements have been met. End users are therefore moving towards using particulate and coalescing filters during the bulk storage of diesel fuel. Hydac is involved in all aspects of diesel fuel filtration and coalescing, including onboard engine filtration, coalescing filters for filtration and the dewatering of fuel on diesel engines. The company can also handle bulk storage filtration and coalescing filters for 52 the effective removal of particulate and water in these applications. For applications in which smaller diesel tanks are used, such as standby diesel gen sets, Hydac also offers standard plug-and-play solutions whereby diesel fuel is circulated though a filter/coalesce to keep it in optimum condition. Hydac has addressed the issue of online particle counting in bulk diesel fuel applications and offers a solution whereby the cleanliness of diesel fuel can be reported online. This has great advantages for end users, who are able to verify the cleanliness of any diesel fuel being dispensed into the system. For diesel tanks, Hydac can offer particulate and desiccant breathers. Whether you need a solution for the removal of particulates and/or water, or of air entering into bulk diesel fuel tanks, Hydac, with its extensive range, can help you. www.hydac.com.au "Contaminants ... have an effect on the spray patterns of the injector."
