Fashion Memories
It is not until you start looking through photos of yourself
from days gone by that you realise many of life's great
moments are not necessarily defined by what you were doing,
but more by what you were wearing!
Looking back, fashion ages us in the most graceful of ways. If
you were a child of the 70's, you may well remember the disco
era which included flared pants, platform shoes and sequins
galore. Movies such as 'Saturday Night Fever' and 'Grease'
were setting the world on fire and fashion was all about being
bright and sparkly.
If you were a child of the 80's, it was all about big hair
and shoulder pads which complimented the matching
two-piece suit. Anything was acceptable in the
fashion stakes as long as it was big and loud of course!
Who doesn't remember NZ's own TV series Gloss,
or the ever-popular Dynasty and Dallas which
showcased 'power-dressing?' to perfection?
The 90's however, was a stark contrast to the 80's in
that street wear, aka 'grunge', ruled, stemming from
the rock band culture which was symbolised by
torn and over-sized clothing. The casual look also
took hold with tee shirts, jeans and hoodies worn
with sneakers, providing a more relaxed and 'laid
back' approach to dressing. It was a far cry from the
previous decade of fashion decadence.
Memories are what life is made of, and those
moments in time have the ability to remind us
of what we liked about ourselves but often didn't
appreciate. 'If only we knew now what we knew
back then!'
