:from the inside out out From the inside Tips on how to put good things into your body so you'll look great on the outside! Eating for Beautiful Skin While lotions and potions can improve your skin from the outside, a healthy diet works from the inside. A nutritious balanced diet isn't only a delicious way to eat – it can work wonders for your skin. Healthy Skin Check List: These are the essentials your body needs to keep your skin in tip-top condition... • The most essential element is water. Although there's water in the foods you eat, you should drink at least two litres of water a day to keep your body healthy and your skin clear. • Cellulose carbohydrates, better known as fibre foods, have another less direct effect on the skin. Their action in keeping you regular can help to give you a brighter, clearer complexion. • Vitamin A is essential for growth and repair of certain skin tissues. Lack of it causes dryness, itching and loss of skin elasticity. It's found in foods such as carrots, spinach, broccoli and apricots. • Vitamin C is needed for collagen production, to help keep your skin firm. It's found in foods such as strawberries, citrus fruits, cabbage, tomatoes and watercress. • Vitamin E is an anti-oxidant vitamin that neutralizes free radicals – highly reactive molecules that cause ageing. It occurs in foods such as almonds, hazelnuts and wheat germ. 62 | www.h e rma gaz i n e . c o. n z • Zinc works with vitamin A in the making of collagen and elastin, the fibres that gives your skin its strength, elasticity and firmness. Be a Fruity Beauty Since their launch, skin care products that contain alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) have grown in popularity. They were the biggest skin-care invention of the 1990s, and their success has stayed firm ever since... with good reason. Many women find they dramatically improve the condition and look of their skin. Without even realizing it, women have used AHAs for centuries and have reaped the benefits on their skin. For example, Cleopatra is said to have bathed in goats' milk and ladies of the French court applied wine to their faces to keep their skin smooth, supple and blemish free. Both these ancient beauty aids are now known to contain AHAs. The great news about AHA products is they are now affordable. Many mid-market companies are including the benefits of AHAs in their products, so everyone can give their skin the high-tech treatment it deserves. You can also find AHA products for the hands and body, so you can reap the benefits from top to toe. What you put into your body has a dramatic effect on your appearance. Take good care of yourself from the inside out. Phoenix Renata www.phoenixcosmetics.co.nz
