"Cooler Than Me," Mike Posner 5. "Cafe Mocha," Jesse Cook 6. "Please Don't Stop the Music," My Fitness Music 7. "Halo (Gomi Club Remix)," Beyonce 8. "Chasing Pavements," Adele, 3:31 With crazy names, such as Piloxing, aerial yoga, Core Fusion Barre, and Neuromuscular Integrative Action, these multidisciplined 'fusion' fitness classes are all the rage. By mixing workouts with disparate disciplines (think: Pilates + boxing, Zumba + water aerobics) they can get your body working in ways it wouldn't otherwise and get you out of that fitness rut.Targeting a greater range of muscles, these classes are a fun way of trying something new. Offering guidance on long-term changes people can make to get fit, wellness coaches offer a one-on-one approach similar to that of personal trainers, but look holistically at a person's lifestyle to determine which healthy behaviour modifications and strategies to put into place. With the rise in popularity of wellness coaching, personal trainers are also now offering this kind of service. Your doctor or local gym should be able to refer you to one in your area, and they can help you with anything from getting started on a fitness programme to planning a complete health strategy. We have decoded the shoe-lingo for you, so you will be up with the play when looking for your next pair ensuring you get exactly what you need. INSOLE: A removable foam insert that sits under your foot to help the shoe fit better. Cushioning and shock absorption can also be added through the use of insoles, generally occurring between the midsole the heel and forefoot. OUTSOLE: Typically available in two forms: carbon rubber (usually all black) or a combination of colorful blown rubber and black carbon rubber. Carbon rubber is harder wearing and can provide more traction, while blown rubber is softer, lighter and more flexible. MIDSOLE: Generally made of foam, this layer gives the shoe its cushioning and support. The more grey-coloured material you see by the arch, the more stability the shoe offers. If there's no grey, it's probably a neutral/cushioning shoe (good for high arches); if the gray is mostly limited to under the arch, it's a stability shoe (good for runners with normal arches); if the grey wraps from the arch to around to the heel, it's a motion-control shoe (good for flat arches). UPPER:The top part of your sneaker is all about comfort and style. Look for one that allows your toes to move around freely and comfortable. Also worth noting is the mesh -the more mesh there is, the more breathable your shoe will be. "Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) is a perfect way to maintain fitness through winter. Because you are standing on a board you don't get wet. All you need to do is add booties on the cold mornings and you're away. The winter days are nice and sunny and the water is calm and clear making SUP an even better option. It's a great time to go exploring with the calm waters and no wind. It is also a good opportunity to go paddling and then soak in hot pools afterwards like Lake Tarawera in Rotorua or even the Pilot Bay/Main Beach and then finish at the Mt Hot Pools... SUP is a great way to stay active and get outside into the fresh air rather than staying indoors and covered up.You also have more chance of staying healthy over winter as your body warms up from the exercise. Hiria Rolleston www.ecpsurf.co.nz The top 5 physical/social benefits of stand up paddle boarding: • Easy to learn - most people can stand up in their first lesson • Excellent overall body work out, especially core strength • Stress reliever • Community of positive people • Connection with nature www.h e rmagaz in e .co.n z | 53
