Golda Meir Golda Meir was the Iron Lady of Israeli politics years before the epithet was coined for Margaret Thatcher. She was once described as 'the only man in the Cabinet.' Golda served as Israel's Foreign Minister from 1956 to 1966 and was called out of retirement, at the age of 70, to become the new Prime Minister of Israel in 1969. It marked the high point of a long career dedicated to the cause of the Labour party's vision of Zionism. Definition of Zionism The national movement for the return of the Jewish people to their homeland and the resumption of Jewish sovereignty in the land of Israel. She was in all ways a formidable woman: in appearance she was tall and austere, with the stresses of a hard life reflected in her face; in personality, she was honest, straightforward and single-minded. In the eyes of the world, she personified the Israeli spirit. Golda Meir Source: www.notablebiographies.com 8 | W H O ' S W H O 2 0 13
