7 UNSTOPPABLE WOMEN WHO MADE HISTORY AND PAVED THE WAY We look at women of the past who moulded the leaders and lifestyles of the women today, those that were courageous and fought for what they believed in. Their actions have resulted in the many self-made women we have in today's society with many like them. Educated and ambitious, the course women have taken has changed to what it was like over 50 years ago.You could even say these women changed the world. 1. Starting with Sappho Born in 630 BC we do not know much about her life which remains lost in history, but her wonderful words and beautiful imagery presented in the lyrical poetry she wrote was praised by Plato and revitilised during the Renaissance. 2.Joan of Arc Joan of Arc was an incredible military leader, winning countless victories for France during the Hundred Years War. She was later declared a martyr and patron saint of France. Burned at the stake for heresy at 19 years old, her memory lives on in the many art forms depicted of her by Shakespeare, Mark Twain and modern films. 3.Florence Nightingale The one who laid the foundation for nursing to be used as a career during the time when marriage, children and family were considered the ultimate achievement for women. Later on she helped to issue reforms to improve British healthcare, expand opportunities for women in the workplace and help ease hunger in India. 4.Marie Curie A Polish physicist and chemist she remains the only person to win the Nobel Prize in multiple sciences. She was a pioneer of research into radio activity and continued to break ground when she became the first female professor at the University of Paris. 5.Rosa Parks Tired of giving in to discrimination and segregation, an ordinary seamstress earned a place in history the day she refused to give up her seat for a white passenger on board a bus. This refusal sparked a civil rights movement which she was a pioneer of. She also won many prestigious accolades and awards. She was recognised by TIME magazine as one of "the 20 most influential people of the 20th century". 6.Catherine the Great The powerful Russian empress who did business the smart way. Enlisting the assistance of esteemed generals and nobles, she saw many reforms and architectural advancements. She also established the first state-financed higher education for women in Europe. Often labelled the Golden Age of Russia, she helped this massive country become the largest and most powerful it had ever been. 7.J.K. Rowling The only modern representative of an incredible woman to make the list is none other than the author of the best-selling book series in history. A true rags to riches transformation story, she was a single mother struggling to stay afloat writing stories of wizards and muggles, and the wonderful creation of Harry Potter made her a multi-millionaire.
