Beginner's luck: Selwyn Snowfields
If you don't need double black diamonds, Selwyn
Snowfields near Adaminaby is bang on budget and is
nirvana for novices. Half the terrain is rated 'beginner',
with prices to match. No-one will notice a face plant here.
Selwyn Snowfields has the 'full assorted chocolate box'
of 10 lifts accessing 45 hectares, chairlifts, T-bars, rope
tows and Pomas, plus snow tubing and tobogganing. If you
want to graduate to skiing in Europe (never say never), that
T-bar and Poma experience will come in handy.
There are two terrain parks, and while a day ticket costs
$82, access to the two parks only is just $25 – one of the
best deals on the ski fields.
It's a 30- to 40-minute drive from Adaminaby to
Selwyn Snowfields.
Stay
Selwyn Snowfields is a day resort, which means
there's no on-snow accommodation, but Snowy
Mountains Holiday Centre arranges packages
and hotel accommodation around Adaminaby.

Eat & drink
The Swingin' T-bar on Mez is located on the
mezzanine floor of the Selwyn Centre. For a
calorie injection, fuel up at The Bake House in
Adaminaby with mouth-watering Danish pastries.
Explore
Ride an inflatable tube down the slopes of
Snowflake Snowtube Park ($25 for five rides)
or hire a toboggan ($22 for half-day toboggan
hire and pass).

If you're a keen cross-country skier, go to:

in Victoria for its 30 kilometres of cross-country ski trails.
• Mt Stirling (www.mtstirling.com.au), just 30 minutes from Mt Buller,
Victoria. Catch the Backcountry Festival in July.
• Ben Lomond (www.skibenlomond.com.au), a 70-minute drive from
Launceston, Tasmania. Be a devil and drop in for some turns.
