Paddlesteamer
Emmylou
The Murray River paddle-steamer
PS Emmylou was built in the early
1980s to the specifications of
paddle-steamers from the 1800s
and runs on a restored 1906 steam
engine. Her home berth is at the
port of Echuca, in central northern
Victoria, which she shares with
PS Canberra and Pride of the Murray.
Originally, paddle-steamers ferried
people and goods from the Murray, Darling
and Murrumbidgee river systems to
Echuca, an active pioneer outpost.
Today, the port of Echuca still operates
in much the same way as it did in the
1860s during its heyday, with shipwrights
and steam engineers contributing to the
port's operation.
Paddle-steamers are propelled through
the water by paddle-wheels, which are
driven by a steam engine.
Visitors can stay on PS Emmylou for
one-, two- or three-night cruises, or take
a lunch or dinner cruise while enjoying the
Murray River scenery. Sleep in two-berth
cabins with traditional-style bunks to have
the true riverboat experience.
With few paddle-steamers operating
today, PS Emmylou exists as a lasting
symbol of the Murray River's past.
