From Cadet to Captain
At the end of 2012, four graduates from
Rex's Australian Airline Pilot Academy
(AAPA) reaped the rewards of their labour
by achieving Command positions on the
Saab 340 fleet.
They all commenced flying with Rex
around four years ago after graduating
from AAPA and have accumulated
approximately 3,000 hours on the
Saab 340 aircraft. These pilots were able
to use the skills and flight experience
gained in Rex's Pilot In Command Under
Supervision Program (PICUSP) to meet
Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA)
requirements for the issue of the Airline
Transport Pilot Licence, a prerequisite for
all Saab Captains.
To gain entry into PICUSP, each first
officer is assessed on a case-by-case basis
and must pass a rigorous screening process
by the Flight Operations department to
assess their overall suitability to enter the
program and hold a Command position.
Having completed the program, which
includes both simulator and aircraft
training and assessments, the pilots are
scattered throughout the Rex Group.
PICUSP provides a pathway for first
officers to meet the rigid regulatory
requirements for Command and enables
Rex to receive a regular stream of
Captains graduating from the cadet pool
of first officers.
