Round-up
GET THERE
McLaren Vale is 35 kilometres south of Adelaide
(about a 45-minute drive).
STAY
French oak barrels piled up to the ceiling,
some dating back to 1894.
A later owner, Greg Trott, built a giant
medieval-style catapult in the garden of Wirra
Wirra. Trott passed away in 2005 but the winery
continues to celebrate his birthday each year
by catapulting watermelons into neighbouring
vineyards and toasting Trott with a glass or two
of Catapult Shiraz.
After my tour I relax in the garden of Wirra
Wirra while gazing at vines in the Scrubby Rise
and Woodhenge vineyards. I raise my glass in
a toast to the winemakers of McLaren Vale
who contributed to making the region a lovely
place for all to enjoy.
Fast Fact
Scarce Earth is a
McLaren Vale initiative
celebrating the terroirs of the
region. All Scarce Earth wines
come from a single block, a
small plot of land with a
distinct flavour profile
and personality.
