And then there are some very cool, clever restaurants serving creative, complex and wellbalanced dishes that people love exploring while they're wrapped up in business or pleasure. The Bridge Room is firmly in the latter group, bridging the gap between a business restaurant and somewhere to take a friend or lover to impress the socks off them. The staff, in their three-piece black suits, ooze European elegance and astute professionalism while keeping the atmosphere relaxed and not too formal. The menu is an interesting offering of fresh, original combinations that surprise while simultaneously sticking to the foundations of the classics, such as the mouth-watering burnt caramel cream and pear salad with pistachio crumb, mint, purple basil and raisins for dessert. The Bridge Room is housed in a lightsaturated 1930s heritage building near Circular Quay. Owner-chef Ross Lusted had his eye on the building for about 15 years and was about to set up in New York when he heard it had become available. It was enough to entice him back to a space where business always blends beautifully with pleasure. www.thebridgeroom.com.au Soiree at the Sofitel bar scene SYDNEY Sofitel Sydney Wentworth's new bar, Soirée, takes you back to the '60s. Inspired by the fashion and design icons and popular culture of the era, the Joseph Pang-designed bar is a sophisticated setting with a broad curved wall, bronzed finishes and egg chairs. The fabulous cocktail list celebrates the sexiest women of the '60s and includes the Emma Peel 1961, the Bond-inspired Pussy Galore 1964 and the Brigitte Bardot 1962, as well as '60s sours such as the signature Say It Isn't So martini and the Aston Martin DBS for those who like their drinks shaken, not stirred. The menu, too, re-creates kitschy retro classics such as delicious devilled eggs, prawn cocktails and, of course, fondue while offering luxe takes on caviar, oysters and lobster. From '60s-themed high teas to clever cocktails and live entertainment on Fridays, Soirée is certainly the place to see and be seen. www.sofitelsydney.com.au 7
