checkin Five minutes with … Milijana Nikolic The operatic mezzo-soprano from Redcliffe in Queensland speaks with Kate Kunkel about her latest starring role as Carmen, her new baby and her passion for performing. What motivated you to tackle the role of Carmen? Carmen is an absolutely amazing role that I think every mezzo-soprano would like to play. She is a very challenging and complex character with many layers, which gives you a great opportunity to dig deeper every time you play her. How do you balance family life and performing? It's been such a crazy time for me recently. My baby boy is an absolute joy, and even though I get so exhausted by the end of the day, his beautiful smile gets me through everything. Nothing is too hard for me at the moment. I'm also lucky to have my parents over here from Serbia to help me out. What's it like having a husband in the business? My husband [tenor Rosario La Spina] is such a great source of support for me. We're lucky to work together from time to time on the same show, which is fantastic because we get to spend all our time together. However, it's also hard sometimes, as we travel to different destinations, too. What piqued your interest in opera? I started singing professionally in the national opera of Serbia in 2000. However, my first time 'on stage' was at my grandparents' house when I was just six years old. I found my uncle's old guitar and sat on a high chair in front of the mirror, making up songs. What's the best part about having a career in opera? I get to do what I love to do as my job. When playing different characters you get to explore yourself, travel to interesting places, meet interesting people and experience other cultures. It's just so life-enriching. And the worst part? What are you most looking forward to? I can't wait to take on the role of this fascinating woman again. I consider myself very lucky to do a job that's always been my passion – singing and performing – and if I can reach the hearts of the audience and move them with my performance, I'll be happy because I will have achieved my goal. Milijana Nikolic plays Carmen at Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour on April 3, 5, 7, 10 and 12, 2013. Performance in French with English subtitles. To book, visit www.opera-australia.org.au. Fast Fact Milijana Nikolic has performed in famous opera houses throughout the world, including Teatro alla Scala (Milan), Teatro dell'Opera (Rome) and the Sydney Opera House. Some aspects of travelling – I hate packing and I miss my family. 3
