checkin Five minutes with Jenny Brockie The Gold Walkley Award-winning journalist and host of SBS's Insight program speaks with Emma Wheaton. Why did you want to become a journalist? To find out about the world. How did you get into the industry? Via an ABC journalism cadetship. What were you doing before hosting Insight? Making feature-length TV documentaries. What does your role on Insight entail? Lots of brainstorming with our talented team, and copious reading and scripting. What do you love about working on Insight? The people I meet, and the team I work with. And the fact that the Insight studio is so different every week. What has been the stand-out change in the industry since you began on the program more than a decade ago? Online, particularly social networking. Nothing comes near it. Of all the issues you've covered on Insight, which one has moved you the most? No single issue. It's people's bravery in sharing difficult experiences. It sounds trite, but it's a privilege to bear witness to that. What can Insight viewers expect from the program this year? How important is it to present with warmth and humour? It's so important to foster warmth in the studio. People need to feel comfortable and safe, to know they'll get a fair hearing. Creating the right atmosphere makes if easier to ask difficult questions. What has been your most memorable career moment to date? Jenny says: "It's so important to foster warmth in the studio. People need to feel comfortable and safe." Extraordinary stories from people they won't see anywhere else. An immigrant once stopped me in the street and thanked me for helping to educate her kids, for encouraging them to listen to different points of view. That was pretty cool. Jenny Brockie hosts Insight, SBS's flagship news and current affairs program, which airs on Tuesdays at 8.30pm on SBS ONE. 3
