herb garden. We watched traditional olive oil pressing
and bread making, as well as sampling sweets like
sugared almonds, fog cake and of course, limoncello!
A VENETIAN FINALE
e final two days of the journey were spent in Venice,
and as the ship sailed into this magnificent port, guests
were treated to a glass of bubbles on the bridge, so we
could take in the views from every angle.
At the top of my to-see list was the Peggy Guggenheim
Collection. We hired a chic water taxi, which jetted us
through the Venetian canals and landed us at the gallery
within 20 minutes.
Peggy Guggenheim's former home, it features
masterpieces from the American heiress's personal
collection. After a wander through the Nasher Sculpture
Garden, we happened across a beautiful canal-side
eatery, La Zucca, where I enjoyed sarde in saor, a dish of
fried sardines marinated in vinegar, onions, raisins and
pine nuts. Much as I loved my meal, I did experience a
twinge of menu envy as my Canadian friends opted for
risotto al nero di seppia, or squid ink risotto.
Following lunch, our water taxi sped us back to the ship
and later that night we enjoyed a bittersweet farewell
dinner, again at Manfredi's, and a nightcap at e
Viking Bar, enjoying cocktails and, of course, limoncello!
