eventspecial Queensland Mining and Energy Expo Boom Smart business owners looking to capitalise on Queensland's mining and energy boom are flocking to expos, writes Simone Henderson-Smart. Despite some projects being put on hold for the moment, the Queensland mining boom shows no signs of abating and 2013 is set to be a huge year for the region. Director of Australian Events Bob Carroll is the driving force behind the only two mining and energy events in Queensland this year that, he says, will help business and industry capitalise on this incredible growth. The Central Queensland Transport, Trades and Mining Expo (CQ Expo) was an enormous success when it launched in Rockhampton last year as a vehicle for promoting businesses across the mining, transport and energy industries, linking businesses with key decision-makers in the rapidly developing Southern Bowen Basin and Galilee Basin. To address current needs and trends, this year the expo will focus on technology, as Carroll explains: "Technology and its adaptation to all sorts of industries helps to keep costs down and improve productivity. Increasing efficiency and cutting costs will be important as we move into 2013, and at 84 CQ Expo we will showcase companies that have developed innovative technology for industry and mining." Falling commodity prices means that increased efficiency is more important than ever. The chief economist for the Australian Bureau of Resources and Energy Economics, Quentin Grafton, agrees, saying that expected record-breaking resources earnings will be driven by high production levels rather than rising prices. "Despite projections of lower commodity prices relative to 2010–11 over the medium term, increased resources and energy export earnings are projected to be underpinned by substantially greater export volumes for most commodities," he said in a statement. The success of the CQ Expo comes off the back of the only other mining and energy event to be held in Queensland this year, the Surat Basin Energy & Mining Expo. Held in Toowoomba, last year's event saw 6,000-plus visitors flock to see more than 400 exhibitors and Carroll expects this year to be even bigger.
