Added sugar overload
Recent research by The University of Sydney has revealed
Aussie kids are increasingly consuming too much added
sugar, with boys aged 14 to 16 reaching an average daily
intake of 22 teaspoons. 'Added' sugar is added during
processing – on top of naturally occurring sugar in food.
The World Health Organization recommends children
obtain no more than 10 per cent of their total energy
intake from added sugars, but research shows boys are
consuming closer to 13 per cent. Sugar-laden soft drinks
and sweetened cordials are among the main culprits, as
they offer no nutrients but plenty of unwanted calories.
