The barges were loaded and float tested before being sent to the islands Heavy duty aluminium boats 10ft (3m) x 2ft (0.6m) wooden wear-strips along either side of the barges to help deflect some of the bumps and lumps they are likely to encounter in this remote region. Wood was the easy choice, as it is something that, in due time, the islanders themselves should be able to easily replace.
