10m with rear facing windscreen, so the cabin layout was
designed with our input. Alloy Cats did a wonderful job of
putting her together; we were able to follow her progress
in build, and the strength and craftsmanship shows in the
end result. Having a boat builder that kept us informed
and allowed us to view the boat in stages made for a good
working relationship, with any issues sorted out by phone
or email as they popped up. We are very pleased with the

hull runs very smoothly, is responsive to the helm and is
very forgiving.
The overall cost, including fitout, was somewhere
around $650,000. Funding the project would not have
been possible without the generous support of the Lion
Foundation, Southern Trust, Pub Charity and Grassroots
Trust.
Having worked her for a year now, the Coastguard crew
have found the special features in the design such as the rear
facing seats, work really well, especially on long tows. The
cabin area's six seats and the stepped hull design provide
for extra safety and stability as the boat holds on really well
in rough weather. And increasing the front windscreen
thickness has given them a lot of extra comfort when they
take heavy swells crossing Whakatane's bar.
Teething problems have been minimal; the worst being
the fitted QL trim tabs and Alloy Cats worked with the
importers and soon got them operating to spec. The
trailer also had some centreing problems when they were
winching the vessel up but this was mainly due to the
size of the boat at low tide with a strong current pushing
her sideways. Once again this was taken care of by Alloy
Cats adding front and side guide poles, and these now
keep the boat straight coming on the trailer, no matter
what current there is.
Coastguard Whakatane say their Naiad design is, "The
4WD of the sea and the 10m is just that. Naiad
incorporated a good deal of our design layout and features
we required to fit the purpose. We were the first to get a
