NEW WIRELESS NETWORKING AND APPS
Simrad Yachting have released their new networking solution,
GoFree Wireless with user-friendly wireless software and
rugged marine grade navigation hardware. The system has a
GoFree viewer, control app, and the Simrad
WIFI-1 wireless gateway, enabling
wireless
connectivity
between Simrad NSS
multifunction displays,
and
tablets
and
smartphones.
Designed for use
with the Apple iPad,
the powerful GoFree
Controller app allows
boaters to control Simrad
NSS functions, in real time, from anywhere on a
boat. Replicating the NSS display, the app enables zooming and
panning, radar control, StructureScan, sonar operation and full
interactivity with SonicHub entertainment options.
The GoFree hardware supports simultaneous connectivity
with multiple devices enabling multi-user access from anywhere
on a vessel. For added security and safety, access to the WIFI-1
can be restricted with a network access password through the
Simrad NSS menu so that control levels and permissions can be
managed for each connected device.
Data from the system can be shared via open protocol to a
range of third party PC and Mac navigational software and
iOS apps, such as iNavX, iRegatta and Rosepoint Coastal
Explorer, to name a few.

74 Professional Skipper January/February 2013
The refueller Roks
Dae Cheong was
being manoeuvred
at a distance of
less than 100m and
closing under pilot
control directly
ahead into her berth
at a reasonable closing pace by the tugs Waka Kume and Waipapa.
The charter boat Zefiro with her numerous passengers passed,
albeit at a reasonable cruising speed, between the approaching ship,
tugs and the wharf.
Surely the skipper must have known (or guessed?), that
coming between a berthing ship with tugs and a wharf
contravenes local harbour rules as well as the Col Regs and
might even be dangerous?
HARBOURMASTER RESPONDS: Weve had a couple of
incidents of recreational vessels impeding container ships in
the Rangitoto Channel recently, but this looks like a case of
somebody who should have known better doing something in
contravention of the rules and exhibiting poor seamanship.
It serves as a timely reminder that Masters must not allow
their vessel to impede the navigation of any vessel of 500
gross tonnage or more if the vessels are in the pilotage area.
A moving prohibited zone extending 100m astern and 100m
to each side and continued to such width to 500m ahead is
reserved around such vessels.
We will make further enquiries regarding this particular incident.
