Pest-free Warrant
celebrates a year of success
COUNCIL AND the Department of
Conservation celebrated the first year of their Pest-free
Warrant scheme on November 29, 2012 by awarding Pest
Free warrants to six new companies.
The Pest-free Warrant scheme is a key part of the
Treasure Islands biosecurity programme run by Auckland
Council and DOC to keep the Hauraki pest free islands free
of pests. It involves DOC and the council working with
ferry and tourism operators and other companies running
vessels or carrying out contracts on pest free islands in the
Hauraki Gulf Marine Park such as Rangitoto, Motutapu
and Rakino, and is designed to ensure they dont carry
pests such as rats, mice and Argentine ants to the islands.
Industry leader Nic Meads of Auckland Sea Kayaks, the
first recipient of the warrant in 2011, presented the awards
to Auckland Water Taxis, Classic Boat Charters, Explore
NZ, Fullers Group Ltd, 360 Discovery Ltd and SeaLink.

Ocean remains warmer than normal, especially around and
west of the dateline, but the atmospheric conditions continue
to be near neutral. Global guidance indicates that continuing
neutral conditions (neither El Nio nor La Nia) are the most
likely outcome from December to February. In the New Zealand
region, lower than normal pressures are expected southeast of
the Chatham Islands, with enhanced sou-westerly winds over
New Zealand.
Summer rainfall is likely to be near normal or below normal
in the north and east of the North Island, and near normal
elsewhere. Summer soil moisture levels and river flows are
likely to be below normal in the north and east of the North
Island, near normal for the southwest of the North Island and
Nelson-Marlborough, and near normal or below normal over the
remainder of the South Island.
Summer temperatures are likely to be near average or below
average in western areas of both Islands, as well as the east
of the South Island, and near average elsewhere. Sea surface
temperatures around New Zealand are currently about one
degree colder than normal, and are expected to continue below
normal over the summer period.
For this tropical cyclone season from November to April,
the risk of an ex-Tropical Cyclone approaching New Zealand
is expected to be near normal. On average, one ex-Tropical
Cyclone nears New Zealand during the season.
Summer rainfall is likely to be near normal or below normal
in the north and east of the North Island, and near normal
elsewhere.
