SANFORD JOINS WORLD
OCEAN COUNCIL
SANFORD IS THE first New Zealand company to join
the World Ocean Council, a global alliance working
for sustainable development and conservation of the
worlds oceans. Sanfords presence significantly expands
fishing industry involvement in the WOC. WOC is
an unprecedented global industry alliance focused on
corporate ocean responsibility.
Sanfords fleet may gather a range of ocean, weather
and climate data from around New Zealand and the
Pacific, and share this with the WOC. This data is an
important global business and scientific resource.
WOC Executive Director, Paul Holthus said Sanfords
membership creates new and critical opportunities for
business led action on ocean sustainability challenges in
the Pacific. In confirming Sanfords WOC membership,
Paul Holthus said fisheries companies have unique
ocean stewardship concerns and responsibilities, and
he sees Sanfords leadership in WOCs Smart Ocean/
Smart Industries initiative as being important for data
gathering by all kinds of ocean users and the broader
ocean science community.
WOC was established in 2008. Its members include
over 50 leading organisations from a wide range of ocean
industries: oil and gas, shipping, seafood, tourism, ocean
technology, maritime law, marine environmental services
and others.

$20m-$21m compared to the last years result of $22.3m.
Revenue is approximately one percent behind last year with
the continuing high level of the New Zealand dollar impacting
across all of our export species. Markets for pelagic species
such as jack mackerel, blue mackerel and skipjack tuna have
been strong, but salmon pricing has been significantly weaker
impacted by increased volumes out of Chile and Norway. Prices
for other species have been relatively stable.
The
most
significant impact
on the results for
the year has been
the
estimated
$10m reduction in
contribution from
the Pacific Tuna
division.
The
effects include
lost fishing time
opportunity and
repair costs in
respect to the San Nikunau and the Ocean Breeze and legal costs
and accrued potential fine costs in respect to the prosecution
of the San Nikunau which is subject to a sentencing hearing in
Washington DC on January 11, 2013.
Profitability from greenshell mussel business in the South
Island has been up to expectations but in the North Island slow
growth in Coromandel and the changes in ownership of the
processing business in Tauranga impacted returns in this area.
