The charter boat Zefiro with her numerous passengers passed, albeit at a reasonable cruising speed, between the approaching ship, tugs and the wharf. Surely the skipper must have known (or guessed?), that coming between a berthing ship with tugs and a wharf contravenes local harbour rules as well as the Col Regs and might even be dangerous? HARBOURMASTER RESPONDS: Weve had a couple of incidents of recreational vessels impeding container ships in the Rangitoto Channel recently, but this looks like a case of somebody who should have known better doing something in contravention of the rules and exhibiting poor seamanship. It serves as a timely reminder that Masters must not allow their vessel to impede the navigation of any vessel of 500 gross tonnage or more if the vessels are in the pilotage area. A moving prohibited zone extending 100m astern and 100m to each side and continued to such width to 500m ahead is reserved around such vessels. We will make further enquiries regarding this particular incident. Andrew Hayton, Harbourmaster
