Sanfords would consider
withdrawal
VIP.S86
SANFORDS SAID ON TV3s Firstline in October that it
would consider pulling out of the $50 million toothfish
fishery in the Ross Sea if it was properly compensated.
Sanford has been catching Antarctic toothfish for 14 years,
and says it also helps police the Ross Sea for illegal fishing.
We developed the fishery, says Sanford managing
director Eric Barratt. Weve put a lot of money, a lot of
effort and a lot of development into it and if somebody
wants to come along and buy us out of the fishery then
they should approach us and do so.
Mr Barratt also said it would cost a large sum, a very
large sum for Sanfords to withdraw from the Ross Sea.
Green groups responded positively, saying Sanford led
the charge into the Ross Sea and can lead it out again.
The Last Ocean filmmaker Peter Young says its opened
the door for New Zealand to push for full protection,
Theres far more value in the Ross Sea as an intact
marine ecosystem than just another fishing ground.
Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee is throwing his support
behind a Cook Strait ferry terminal at Clifford Bay, saying that
Picton could reinvent itself as another Queenstown if the
terminal went ahead.
The Government plans to build a new terminal at Clifford Bay,
about 35 kilometres south of Blenheim, despite the estimated price
tag rocketing from $200 million to $422m. A move to Clifford Bay
could cut up to 80 minutes off a road-ferry trip between Wellington
and Christchurch, and up to 110 minutes off a rail-ferry journey.
Picton business owners have expressed concerns, saying many
would be badly hit by a relocation but Mr Brownlee said the
town had intrinsic beauty and Picton could become another
Queenstown. There are opportunities for a town like Picton,
where most of the foreshore is taken up by the ferry terminal.
Picton Business Group chairman Graham Gosling said the
ferries, bring in more than a million passengers each year. Were
more of a summer destination than an all-year-round destination,
and we just dont have a lot of room to build extra accommodation.
Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman said tourists arriving
from the north are, more likely to turn left and go to Christchurch
than they are to turn right and come back up to Picton.
Mr Brownlee said the business case for Clifford Bay was
now strong enough to justify testing assumptions about its
commercial viability.
A report will be in the Governments hands by the end of April
2013 and if approved the terminal could be built by 2020.
KiwiRail chief executive Jim Quinn said last week he liked
the idea of reducing shipping time, but was not involved in any
decision-making.
The Clifford Bay investigation is part of the Governments
wider infrastructure programme, which Finance Minister Bill
English says includes 67 initiatives to help boost the economy
including: $5.5 billion for the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery
Fund, $1.6 billion for ultra-fast broadband and faster rural
broadband, $5 billion for the national electricity grid and $12.2
billion for roading, between now and 2015.
