of the pontoon cones, offering protection from the water jet units
below. This area is also suitable for recovering persons from the
water. In the centre of the solid transom there is the main towing
post and a small vertical capstan for line recovery work.
Stepping into the main cabin of the deck house, crew seating is
all hydraulic suspension, KAB crew safety seats, complete with
safety harnesses and communication head sets. The coxswain
and helm station is to starboard, opposite to port is the
communications station, while immediately behind the coxswain
is the fully integrated nav station.
Lighting throughout the vessel uses the new Hella LED
lighting system for onboard and navigational use, apart from the
search lights. These new LED lighting systems with their high
brightness and low power consumption have now well surpassed
the older halogen lights, and the high heat and power consuming
lights of old.
A Simrad navigation system from ATL was chosen because
their menu formats are easy to use and also because of the
success the brand has had with other coastguard units around
the country. The onboard navigation system consists of, three
Simrad NSE12 Multifunction displays incorporating the
Simrad 4G, Broadband radar scanner, plus the Simrad Rate
Sensor for heading input and radar overlay.
Simrad Is20 graphic data repeater and a stand-alone wind
instrument using a Maretron Ultrasonic Wind and Weather
sensor enables the information to be shared across the entire
Simrad network.
There is an engine room and an aft cockpit camera for
monitoring both below decks and the cockpit for safety.
Communications includes a Simrad RS87, VHF radio,
with hailer and horn: the hard top has two x Simrad horn
speakers aft and forward, and two Simrad RS10 VHF Radios.
A Simrad Broadband sounder and thru hull tilt element
stainless transducer is provide depth information. The system
is comprehensive and covers all Coastguard Taranakis search
and rescue requirements.
Moving forard we have a small cabin with two berths, a head
and small galley. When a stretcher is required this is carried in
the main cabin and lashed down in the isle where the crew can
still offer medical support.
Having taking delivery, the crew are now coming to grips
with their new greyhound of the sea. Obviously the local
conditions will dictate operational speeds and safety, however
Taranaki Coastguards President Graham Cowling, reports that
the vessel can handle a far greater weather envelope than the
Waveney and that there is a huge improvement in operational
safety and crew comfort. They were still coming to grips with
the full operational capabilities of the vessel at the time of
going to press.
