Depart Kununurra at 9 am aboard a scenic flight to Purnululu National Park, home to the Bungle Bungle Range. The park boasts an extraordinary natural landscape which is testimony to its formation over hundreds of millions of years. Before 1982, when aerial pictures were first released, the area was little known except to pastoralists and the local Aboriginal community. En route, fly over Lake Argyle, the largest artificial lake in the Southern Hemisphere. From the air see the Argyle Diamond Mine, which produces one-third of the world's diamonds. Watch as the domes of the Bungle Bungle Range appear on the horizon. On landing, journey by 4WD along Gorge Track to the southern side of the Bungle Bungle massif. Here, enjoy a walk into majestic Cathedral Gorge and take time to explore the gorge for yourself, wandering amid the towering orange walls. Experience the tranquillity of this impressive gorge, lit from above by a giant hole in its sandstone roof. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the shade of the gorge. After, join a guided walk along the ancient dry bed of Piccaninny Creek and inspect the 350 million year-old orange and black striped beehive domes up close. Your guide will bring the natural history of the Bungle Bungle domes to life. Learn of the Aboriginal people's rich knowledge of the area and the cultural significance of the park. You can even learn bushtucker and bush medicine skills. There is time for an optional scenic helicopter flight over the impressive domes (own expense). Board a scenic flight to World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park. Marvel at the vast landscape as you fly over Lake Argyle and watch as the Bungle Bungle Range appears on the horizon. On arrival, enjoy breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, then travel by 4WD to the starting point of the walk into Echidna Chasm on the northern side of the range. A majestic cleft in the rock massif, Echidna Chasm is considered one of Australia's most amazing walking destinations. Hike along the Livistona palm-fringed trail through towering sandstone walls into the chasm and soak in the atmosphere over a picnic lunch. After lunch, journey to the starting point for the walk into Cathedral Gorge on the southern side of the 76 massif. Explore the gorge, marvelling at the huge natural amphitheatre the sandstone cliffs form. Then enjoy an easy walk along the dry bed of Piccaninny Creek and inspect the domes up close. As you walk your guide will bring the history of these formations to life, explaining how 20 million years of weathering has produced the eroded sandstone towers and banded beehive formations. Your guide will explain in detail the cultural significance of the area to the native Aboriginal people. You'll also gain an insight into Aboriginal bushtucker and bush medicine skills.
