Broome, Boab Prison Tree, Gibb River Road, Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek. Today, begin your complete exploration of the awe-inspiring Kimberley region. At Derby, we visit the Boab Prison Tree, believed to be more than 1,500 years old. With a girth of 14 metres, this hollowed tree was used as a prison cell during the region's early days. Next, we begin our journey on the Gibb River Road, a remote outback highway that accesses some of the Kimberley's best scenery. At Windjana Gorge, a short walk leads into the tranquil gorge, where sheer cliffs tower above white sands. See the ancient marine fossils embedded in the gorge walls. You may also witness freshwater crocodiles lazing on the banks of the Lennard River, which runs through the gorge. We then continue to remarkable Tunnel Creek, a 750 metre natural tunnel carved through the Napier Range, and with torch in hand, wade through the cool waters to view the oasis that awaits us on the other side. Then, drive on to our wilderness lodge in the heart of Ngarinyin country. Here, you'll be able to immerse in the beautiful surrounds, dine under the stars, and take in the enchanting views from your private deck. Two Night Stay: EXCLUSIVE! Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge, with private ensuites, Gibb River Road. Day 3. Galvans Gorge, Barnett River Gorge, Drysdale River Station. Travel through the heart of Kimberley cattle country to discover some of the region's most secluded gorges. At Galvans Gorge, a short walk leads to a picturesque waterhole with boab trees clinging to the escarpment above. Inspect the rock art on the gorge walls and take a leisurely swim. Continue to beautiful Barnett River Gorge, where we'll enjoy lunch in a setting of shady paperbark trees. Look out for the birdlife that inhabits the area and enjoy a refreshing swim. Turning off the Gibb River Road, we travel north on the Kalumburu Road, heading towards the isolated Mitchell Plateau, and arrive at an historic cattle property for a unique overnight stay. Stay: Drysdale River Station, Kalumburu Road. BLD LD Day 2. Bell Gorge, Hiking and Swimming. Back on the Gibb River Road, we travel through outback landscapes to Bell Gorge, where rugged cliffs surround a series of tiered waterholes. Enjoy the afternoon to explore the spectacular scenery and perhaps swim below the waterfall which feeds the lower pool. The area is also a haven for birdlife and provides an opportunity to go bird-watching. While the energetic can choose from a number of hiking opportunities. This is truly an idyllic place to just relax and enjoy the surrounds. Then, head back to our lodge and relax before dinner. 40 BLD Day 4. Mitchell Plateau, King Edward River, Gwion (Bradshaw) Art. Cross the beautiful Drysdale River, then ascend the Mitchell Plateau to enter a remote world of Livistona Palm forests, beautiful lookouts, ancient Aboriginal art, magnificent waterfalls and isolated swimming holes. We'll explore Wandjina and Gwion (Bradshaw) art galleries and swim in the clear waters at King Edward River. For the next two nights, stay at our unique permanent wilderness accommodation beside Pandanus palm-fringed Camp Creek, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip. Enjoy this unique location at the top of the plateau. For wildlife watchers, the region's birdlife includes brolgas, herons, kites and sea eagles, as well as rainforest birds.
