Over its long history Krabi has sheltered pirates, merchants and sea gypsies and today visitors can access its many secluded coves and beaches in traditional long tail boats. Krabi town sits on a river that f lows several kilometres through it and opens into the Andaman Sea at Tambon Pak Nam. It is the sleepy provincial capital with delightful cafés and an outdoor, evening market on the side of the river where you can feast on inexpensive, authentic Thai cuisine. It is also a hub for local fishermen and an important port for ferrying visitors to Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and Railay Beach, one of the premier rock climbing destinations in the world. With white sandy beaches, crystal clear water, extensive coral reefs, numerous caves and waterfalls, Krabi also boasts some of the best sunsets in Thailand that are often accompanied by spectacular displays of cloud to cloud lightning. And where better to view nature's amazing display than at a beachside bar or restaurant? Khao Lak Khao Lak is a 20-kilometre stretch of amazing beaches with a backdrop of jungle-covered mountains and is one of the most popular seaside destinations in Thailand. The area has only two seasons. The wettest season is from April to October while the driest period is from November to March. Its shore is an unusual combination of sand, small pebbles and rocks of various sizes all mixed together. Its peaceful ambience with an abundance of pine and coconut trees attracts visitors both local and those from all around the world who appreciate nature at its unadorned best. Khao Lak Cape is known as the perfect spot to enjoy one of Thailand's splendid sunsets. Watersports are probably the main attractions to the area. Just offshore are the Similan and Surin islands that are home to some of the best diving spots in Asia. There is also great snorkelling and surfing available and the local tourist operators will be able to direct you to the best places. There is an abundance of hotels and resorts in the area with many enjoying beautiful seaside views. It is the perfect destination for nature lovers and those seeking a quiet, yet exotic, tropical holiday. Far away for the hustle and bustle of other beachside destinations, you can enjoy Thai culture that has been largely untouched by outside inf luences as you sit back and truly relax.
