84 | GRAND EXPEDITIONS Day 1. Arrive Manila, Embark Ship. Be met on arrival and transfer to your hotel. Enjoy a Welcome Reception tonight. Stay: Manila, Fairmont Makati or similar. Day 2. Manila, Embark Cruise. On a city tour this morning, head to Rizal Park on Roxas Boulevard. As the place where José Rizal was executed by the Spanish colonial authorities this vast parkland stands as a symbol of Filipino nationhood. Extending over 60 hectares of gardens, ponds, and lawns the park is divided into three distinct sections. Discover the Rizal Monument which contains the mausoleum of this national hero. Then continue onto Intramuros, the 'Walled City' to see church ruins and relics from Spain's Conquistadores. You'll get a taste of the region with lunch in a local restaurant. This afternoon, board the MS Caledonian Sky. 25 Night Stay: aboard the MS Caledonian Sky (includes one night in Torajaland). BLD Day 3. Coron. Coron will be sure to delight with its limestone cliffs and white sandy beaches. Here, you might like to enjoy a relaxing visit to the hot springs, or perhaps visit Kayangan Lake to admire the mangrove forests. BLD Day 4. Puerto Princesa. Enjoy a full day to discover Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. Explore the cathedral chambers and other amazing geological formations of the national park's underground river. One of the river's unique qualities is that it emerges directly into the sea. The region is also a significant habitat for biodiversity conservation containing a complete 'mountain-to-sea' ecosystem with some of the most important forests in Asia. Afterwards, enjoy a tour of a spectacular cave to see its incredible stalactite and stalagmite formations. Later, return to your ship for dinner. BLD Day 5. Sandakan. Perhaps take a half day tour to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the neighbouring Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre to learn about these unique species. Or maybe you'd prefer to take in the World War II city sights of Sandakan and visit an English teahouse. BLD Day 6. Tawau. Today enjoy a tour of Tawau Tanjung Market, said to be the largest indoor market in Malaysia. Here you will find dried and preserved food, wooden crafts, decorative hand-woven baskets and more. Later, take time to browse the local batik clothing at the Pasar Gantung the so-called 'Hanging Market' where goods are displayed from floor to ceiling. BLD Day 7. Kakaban. Discover Kakaban today, a stunningly beautiful limestone island off the coast of eastern Borneo. Spend the day snorkelling over the amazing reefs in the area or join your Expedition Team for a walk to Jellyfish Lake. BLD Day 8. Birahbirahan, Menumbar River. Today, enjoy a Zodiac cruise around Birahbirahan, a beautiful yet tiny island, surrounded by turquoise waters and set close to the coast of East Kalimantan. Afterwards, discover the Menumbar River by Zodiac and perhaps spot monkeys and an incredible array of birdlife. BLD Day 9. Balikpapan. Visit the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation Samboja Lestari Reserve. Home to some 50 Malayan sun bears and 200 orangutans, the foundation's work has profoundly changed the lives of wildlife and local people alike.
