narrow gauge line from St Moritz
to Tirano. The Bernina line is World
Heritage-listed due to the amazing
engineering feats that were required
to create the tracks that cling to
mountainsides, and wind above
high ravines, enter deep tunnels
and cross the Bernina Pass.
CIRCUMETNEA RAILWAY
Mount Etna is the commanding
presence of Sicily's skyline. Running
a 110-kilometre circle around the
volcano's base, traversing
otherworldly lava fields, is the
charming Circumetnea train.
WEST HIGHLAND LINE
Scotland's wonderful West Highland
Line, with the Jacobite Steam Train
as its star, may be known as the
'Hogwart's Express' from the
Harry Potter movies, but railway
traditionalists still call it the 'Iron
Road to the Isles'. All on board will
be enchanted as it climbs through
highland valleys and skirts romantic
glens in the shadow of Ben Nevis.
KYLE LINE
Completed in 1897, the historic Kyle
Line will take you from Scotland's
east to west. The final leg, between
Stromeferry and Kyle of Lochalsh,
required 31 cuttings and 29 tunnels
all carved through solid rock –
a very expensive and incredible
engineering feat for its time.
