Hunter Valley SYDNEY & NEW SOUTH WALES The Historic Heart of Australia On the largest island in the world, the icons are many— but visit New South Wales, Australia's oldest and most populated state, and you'll be able to see dozens in just one loop around Sydney's dazzling harborfront. Here is where you'll find the Sydney Opera House, a UNESCO World Heritage Site the foundation calls "one of the indisputable masterpieces of human creativity," host to live theater, musicals, dance, concerts, and lectures that aspire to the same. Take to the water to get that signature photo of its white billowed walls and the landmark bridge, "The Coat Hanger," by cruising Circular Quay and Darling Harbour. Head inland to walk alongside the Opera House in the oldest botanic garden and scientific institution in Australia, the Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust, or visit the ghosts of The Rocks, its historical district. Or, visit all of Oz at Sydney Wildlife World, whose exhibits are miniature versions of the animals' native regions. If larger than life suits you better, the nearby Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area isn't to be missed. Famous for its Aboriginal significance and Three Sisters natural rock formation—best seen from Echo Point via the 800-step Giant Stairway, the Scenic Railway, and Skyway—as well as its diverse geography, 87 miles of trails and paths, and camping areas, you don't have to be a nature enthusiast to appreciate the 1.3 million hectares of sandstone, eucalypt forests, bushland, and waterfalls; all you need is a sense of wonder. As much as there is to do in the mountains, one sip of wine may be all it takes to lure you out of them. To the north is Hunter Valley, renowned for its Sémillon and popular for its Shiraz, boasting over 120 vineyards with vintages aplenty to toast your latest surfing accomplishments at Bondi or Palm Beach. 10 | Sydney & New South Wales 2 3 4 1 13 11 10 7 5 9 6 12 8
