South America
A Land Like No Other
12
Best of South America
Full of intoxicating culture and arresting
landscapes, this continent unleashes a
fierce passion for life. The samba-shaking
Rio de Janeiro is the sizzling heart of Brazil,
while in Argentina, Buenos Aires is graced
with European architecture and a flair for
tango. With the ever-impressive Machu
Picchu at its core, this is a land of lost cities
and ancient ruins, of jagged Andean peaks
and deep jungles. It is everything and more,
and wherever you are, it is sure to inspire.
Arequipa & Colca Canyon
Amid some of Peru's most unforgiving yet
spectacular terrain, find one of the world's
deepest canyons, the Colca Canyon, and
the dazzling city of Arequipa. Ancient Inca
terraces are built into the near-vertical
landscape and spectacular scenery
envelops tiny mountain villages, seemingly
unaffected by the wear of time. Magnificent
Andean condors soar on warm thermals
and Arequipa's monumental buildings tell
of the region's storied history.
The Galápagos Islands
Just as Charles Darwin did in 1835, you'll
realise there is something truly profound
about the nature of the world upon
experiencing the Galápagos Islands.
Formed from volcanic eruptions deep
beyond the sea floor, the islands were first
occupied by migrating birds, followed by
land dwellers that stole away aboard
floating driftwood. And because there were
no predators for them to be scared of, they
remain strangely unperturbed by humans.
