VANISH TAN MARKS 24 SHEILA MARCH 2012 must hear MUSIC Steve Yollom's picks LEONARD COHEN Old Ideas It may be his first studio album in almost 10 years but it is already being hailed as one of his best. The success of the album lies mainly in the straightforward manner in which he deals with the big questions in life. Old Ideas opens with the spoken- word style track, Going Home, about a man still haunted by his past while trying to navigate his way forward on the road of life. Old Ideas' 10 tracks take you through 40 minutes of your life, delivering brilliant songwriting. Whether or not Cohen is haunted by his past, he proves yet again he is a man who has mastered his art. Awkward Awkward is the latest SAN CISCO offering from Western Australia's very own San Cisco. Hailing from Fremantle, this is the band's second EP. The first, Golden Revolver, was met with much acclaim and success. Barely out of high school, the band is making waves with its unique blend of eclectic indie pop guided by producer Steven Schram (Little Red, Cat Empire and Little Birdy). The title song is a wonderfully clever duet between drummer Scarlett Stevens and frontman Jordi Davieson that will have you humming along in no time. The following tracks highlight the band's talent and attest to the innocent raw energy that is San Cisco. Born to die LANA DEL RAY With a voice echoing years gone by and gothic glamour, New York-raised singer Elizabeth Grant (aka Lana Del Ray) captured the imagination of the world at the end of 2011 with her singles Blue Jeans and Video Games. So with the launch of this, her second album, expectations were high. It starts off well and there are some great pop sounds oozing from the album, but as it unfolds it lacks substance and form. Almost like a movie where the preview is the only thing worth watching.
