Africa is a year-round destination with opportunities for game viewing available throughout the year. For a general guideline to the Great Migration's seasonal movements, please see page 14. DO I REQUIRE A VISA TO TRAVEL TO AFRICA? At the time of printing, Australian passport holders are required to obtain visas before they depart for Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda. Visas are obtainable upon entry for Zambia and Zimbabwe. People of all nationalities will need to contact the relevant consulates or your travel agent for the most up to date information on visa requirements. DO I NEED TO BE VACCINATED BEFORE I TRAVEL? Vaccinations are required/recommended for certain countries in Africa. Yellow Fever Vaccination is required for Tanzania and Rwanda and recommended for Kenya. Antimalarial prevention medication is recommended for Africa along with personal precautionary measures. Visit your health practitioner/travel clinic at least eight weeks prior to travel. CURRENCY & CREDIT CARDS As each African country has its own currency it is advisable to take most of your spending money in US$ in small cash denominations (new notes) plus your credit cards. ATMs are available in most large cities and some airports. LUGGAGE LIMITS Luggage for all internal flights within South Africa is 20 kg per person. Due to travel in smaller aircraft and by 4WD in Kenya and Tanzania, passengers flying in and out of Nairobi will need to reduce their luggage weight to 15 kg inclusive of hand luggage and pack it down into a soft-sided bag (Travelmarvel will provide a bag for use in East Africa). Storage will be available for excess luggage which can be collected at the end of the trip. ELECTRICITY Power points across Africa vary as does the voltage (230 volts in South Africa and 240 volts in East Africa). Multipoint adaptors are recommended. Each hotel and lodge has power, although this may be restricted. HEALTH & FITNESS Our tours through Africa are generally not physically demanding but, due to the nature of the regions visited, the tour may not be suitable for guests with certain medical conditions and physical restrictions. 4WD safaris are often on rough terrain and walking tours may be on uneven ground and may include steep inclines. We recommend all clients to have a reasonable level of fitness and be able to stand for an extended period of time. WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? The dress code on tour is casual. We suggest bringing a pair of good walking shoes and lightweight clothing that can be layered, especially for afternoon game drives and in the evenings, when it can become cooler. Avoid bright colours for game-viewing activities. Standard safari gear should include a broad brimmed hat, sunscreen and mosquito repellent. On the Blue Train, day dress is smart casual and more formal attire is required for the evenings, with a jacket and tie minimum. WHAT IS THE CLIMATE LIKE? South Africa enjoys a mainly temperate climate and plenty of sunshine, although different regions experience varying conditions. May to October is generally considered the most favourable time to visit. Kenya lies on the equator and Tanzania to the south, with both experiencing a range of climates. May to October is cooler with less rain, making it a popular time to travel.
