Novotel Bucharest Romania This newly-opened hotel was built out of the remains of the World War II-bombed National Theatre in the centre of Bucharest. Although destroyed during the Luftwaffe bombardment of the capital on August 24, 1944, the theatre played such an important part in the city's psyche and lifestyle, that to reconstruct the façade of the classic building seemed a natural project. The faithful replica of the loggia as the entrance to the hotel today is considered an architectural triumph. Accommodation is in 243 rooms, 15 suites and one presidential suite in a new modern tower at the rear, while an all-glass boxed reception and conference area allows passersby to view activities within and invites local trade for the hotel's bars and restaurants. The hotel is close to Lipscani Old Town, the National Art Museum, Romanian Athenaeum and Cismigiu Garden. The new National Theatre has been rebuilt near University Square about half a kilometre away. www.novotel.com Devi Garh Udaipur, India Like an Indian version of mythical Camelot this spectacularly sited 18th-century fort palace stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the 5500-strong village of Delawar. With its turrets and towers, breeze-ways and meditation chambers, modern designer wands have worked their magic on this historic building, creating a fairytale atmosphere. There are 39 suites – each with its own 'wow' factor: one rooftop suite extends the full length of the palace and features a private Jacuzzi, swimming pool and a crenellated watch-tower with flying yellow flags – the perfect spot to watch the sunset over the surrounding mountains. Others are spread over two levels, boast a private lobby or courtyard, feature sunken marble baths or are embellished with semi-precious stones, elaborate murals, artefacts and antiques. Guests can be pampered in the resort's own holistic wellness spa, have their fortune told by an on- staff astrologer and dine on tables strewn with flower petals in the lofty Restaurant Terrace – one of the hotel's eight dining options. www.deviresorts.in/devigarh 66 www.travelandliving.com.au
