In Shouson Hill, an exclusive suburb on Hong Kong Island you'll find Crown Wine Cellars a private wine cellar of immense historical significance. Declared a UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Site in 2007, it was originally known as the Central Ordnance (Munitions) Depot, and included 24 underground bunkers of which only eight remain. Constructed almost 70 years ago by the British Military to serve as an ammunition and weapons storage depot in preparation for World War II, the bunkers are located approximately 20 meters below ground with one-metre thick concrete walls and 12-metre long entrance passages, creating a natural cellar environment. The last position in Hong Kong to surrender to the Japanese it has morphed into six state-of-the-art, climate-controlled underground cellars and a private members clubhouse of two bunkers as well as a newly constructed conservatory. Take a walk through the member's storage area, each with its own complex computerised climate control systems and you gaze reverentially at some of the world's most sought after wines. The cellars are available for VIP functions and high-end dinners in the Library where food can be paired to member's own wine. Visitors wishing to dine in the restaurants can request a booking if they are a first-time visitor. If you are a member of The Royal Automobile Club of Australia, The Tattersalls Club, Brisbane and the Brisbane Polo Club, then reciprocal membership will get you into the American Club Hong Kong with its international and affluent membership. If not, then a group booking should get you over the threshold or perhaps a nod from your au fait hotel concierge. The only Member-owned Club in Hong Kong, it has both Town and Country Clubs travel&living 83 The Ritz Carlton has six dining venues that include Chinese and Italian restaurants, the world's highest cocktail bar Ozone (above), a chocolate Library which does a chocolate afternoon tea, an extensive Spa by ESPA located on the 116th floor, and an exclusive Club Lounge floor on 118th.
