Students learn on location T
his year the New Zealand Maritime School has been expanding the scope of our simulation packages and we are now offering portable simulation technology. This has been designed to meet training needs in remote regions and customised company requirements. It was successfully utilised over the winter in remote New Zealand locations for compliance training, with students completing their Restricted Radar Certificates and refresher training for qualified skippers.
Laptops give a virtual simulator
This simulation technology comes in the inauspicious package of a laptop, yet it has the power to be able to simulate multiple vessels in multiple world locations and also many New Zealand ports. We have also been expanding our New Zealand port and coastal areas on the main full mission simulator and are able to transfer this to the portable technology.
The laptops allow students to become competent in using electronic navigation aids such as radar and ECDIS. The lecturer then creates navigational challenges

and collision avoidance situations in real time. The students have full control of the vessel and equipment and learn from their actions so they can build a base of experience they would otherwise not have and transfer it to their own workplace. The bridge systems are similar to those used in the industry, with Furuno and BridgeMaster featuring as the radar models, and although the technology may look simple, the package has a high specification. Student feedback has been very positive, and as with all technology we continue to refine and develop it.
