ALLURING AREQUIPA
Surrounded by three imposing volcanoes,
Arequipa is known as the 'White City' for the
many buildings constructed of sillar – a light-
coloured volcanic stone. A picturesque and
vibrant place, the city's World Heritage-listed
centre is home to many monumental buildings
and more than 64 acres of parks and gardens,
providing the ideal place from which to
absorb the surrounding architecture. Among
other attractions, the city's central square,
Plaza de Armas, is one of the most beautiful in
the country. Nearby, the walled Santa Catalina
Convent, with its own gardens, patios, fountains,
arches and streets, is a miniature town in
the city's heart.
