FRENCH RIVIERA & MONACO 24 French Riviera & Monaco Thoughts of the South of France may conjure up images of spectral waters in an otherworldly blue, golden beaches, marvelous villas, and magnificent yachts hosting the mysterious upper echelons of the elite. In all of these abstract images, there lies truth… yet the beauty of the French Riviera and the Principality of Monaco surpass what can be imagined or conveyed, even by the artistic minds of Matisse and Chagall. In this region, you'll find Nice, the largest port of the Côte d'Azur, where flowered floats add an extra burst of jaunty color during Carnival, and year-round, the palm-lined Promenade de Anglais brings color of a cultural sort through street performers, shops, restaurants, and awe-inspiring views. Just south, the home of the Cannes Film Festival offers endless stretches of Mediterranean coastline and an elaborately upscale experience, with elegant, fashion-forward boutiques along Rue d'Antibes, and posh resort towns like Aix-en-Provence revel in delightful architecture and renowned opera. Tucked into the Maritimes Alps is a principality made famous by one of America's original sweethearts, Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco. Even more well known for the high-stakes Monte Carlo Casino and the incredibly prestigious Formula One Monaco Grand Prix, this Grimaldi-family-ruled region has long been known as a playground for the rich, the famous, and the glamorous. Fairy tale-worthy castles, softly curving beaches, and more than 300 days of sunshine to enjoy it all in makes abundantly clear why the jet set still land in this region, generation after generation—one trend that never ages.
