undertaken to ascertain damage, which proved clear, and she was brought to immediate notice for sea, in light of structural concerns on the wharf and an expected tsunami risk. The three remaining LAVs on the wharf were driven on to land almost immediately after the quake and proceeded into Lyttelton so personnel could assess the situation and provide immediate assistance if necessary. Once the ship's berthing security concerns were allayed, as the wharf appeared to be relatively stable, the crew first concentrated on unloading the vehicles so they could be used to assist in the emergencies ashore.
