Teen left friend for dead A QUEENSTOWN TEENAGER who left his friend for dead after a jet-skiing accident on Christmas Day was sentenced to 12 months' supervision with psychological counselling when he appeared for sentencing at the Queenstown District Court on April 18. Judge Dominic Flatley also ordered the teenager, Jamie Scott Ridgway aged 19, to pay reparations of $2122.50 for search and rescue costs and directed Ridgway to learn maritime safety. "You will have to deal with the consequences of your actions for a very long time," Judge Flatley said. Ridgway had earlier admitted neglecting his legal duty to supply his friend, Connor Williams, with the necessities of life, thereby endangering Williams' life. He also pleaded guilty to criminal nuisance by failing to render assistance, knowing such an act would endanger Williams' life. Ridgway had been behind Williams on the Kawarau River near Queenstown when Williams turned sharply in front of him. Ridgway was unable to avoid the jet ski and ran over the top of Williams, leaving him unconscious. After waking up on his back in the water, Williams swam to shore and later flagged down a car. He was treated in Dunedin Hospital for serious facial fractures. Ridgway called police to report that Williams was missing, but he did not admit to his part in the crash. Get involved...
