food&wine The area is a foodie's haven with a wide choice of boutique retreats, farmhouse restaurants and historical pubs, including the Sevenhill Hotel, established in 1863. The Riesling Trail is a 35-kilometre corridor that links picturesque towns and wineries. Winery picks: Knappstein is housed in the original Enterprise Brewery, built in 1878. Pikes Vintners offers wine-tasting and gourmet grazing plates and has an art gallery. Bed down: Stay at the four-star Clare Valley Country Club or step back in time at Martindale Hall, a 19th-century Georgian mansion in Mintaro that was featured in the 1975 movie Picnic at Hanging Rock. Fleurieu Peninsula Drive from Adelaide: one hour and 15 minutes Known for: shiraz The Fleurieu Peninsula's world-class wine regions, McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek, produce outstanding cabernet sauvignon and shiraz. This area, which encompasses Coorong National Park and its waterways, has a Mediterranean-style climate that is conducive to producing great wines. John Reynell planted the first grapes in McLaren Vale in 1838. Today, the region is famous for its excellent shiraz, contemporary cellar doors and boutique wineries in old stone buildings. At Red Poles restaurant and art gallery, check out the eclectic artworks, indulge in scones with jam and cream, and taste Brick Kiln award-winning wines. Winery picks: The stand-outs in McLaren Vale are Penny's Hill, Hugh Hamilton Wines and the d'Arenberg cellar door. Bed down: Chapel Hill Winery Guest House at McLaren Vale and The Australasian Circa 1858 at Goolwa are highly recommended. Top and above: Leconfield's limestone winery in Coonawarra; check out the exposed terra rossa and cellar door at Hollick Wines. Limestone Coast Drive from Adelaide: four hours Known for: big reds Scottish pastoralist John Riddoch established this wine region in 1891, with plantings at what is now Wynns Coonawarra Estate. The secret to the region's success is its terroir – particularly the strip of terra rossa (red soil) sitting on top of deep limestone beds – which produces red and white wines that are applauded worldwide. Coonawarra, which means 'honeysuckle rise', is an amazing strip of land dotted with well-known wineries. It has won more Jimmy Watson trophies for Australia's best one-year-old reds than any other wine region. The area also produces small amounts of chardonnay, riesling and sauvignon blanc. Winery picks: The restaurant Upstairs at Hollick overlooks the winery's manicured vines and an exposed soil pit that reveals the famous terra rossa.
